The Limon Dance Company arrives at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Thursday for a one-night-only performance of modern dance masterworks, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Moor’s Pavane,” which is generally acknowledged to be one of the greatest modern dance works of the 20th century.
The program at SPAC will feature the following dances:
“Into My Heart’s House”: Set to music by J.S. Bach, this reflective work by former Limon principal dancer Clay Taliaferro carries forward the Limón tradition of passion and humanity in dance.
“The Moor’s Pavane”: Cited by critics the world over as José Limón’s masterpiece, it captures the drama and passion of Shakespeare’s Othello in a timeless portrayal of love, jealousy, and betrayal. A New York Times review notes, “The Limón classic, ‘The Moor’s Pavane,’ was created more than a half-century ago. But passing time and fashion have not diluted its power.”
“There is a Time”: In a major revival of this Limón masterwork, associate artistic director Roxanne D’Orléans Juste has restaged Limón’s lyrical dance of the circle of life. The dance is performed with an original score by Norman Dello Joio, which won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1957.
The evening will get underway with a special pre-curtain talk by Limon Dance Company artistic director Carla Maxwell at 7:30pm, followed by the company’s performance at 8pm.
The performance is presented in conjunction with the Saratoga ArtsFest, and a Saratoga ArtsFest Pass entitles the ticketbuyer to a $5 discount off the regular ticket price of $25.
