From Nippertown to Beantown: The Boston Music Awards

November 15th, 2011, 3:00 pm by Greg

It’s just a short ride on the Mass Pike…

The 24th annual Boston Music Awards will held this weekend at the Liberty Hotel in Boston, so it should come as no surprise that once again a couple of former Nippertown musicians have garnered nominations in some of the most prestigious categories.

John Powhida – formerly of Albany band the Staziaks – has earned another nom as Male Vocalist of the Year for his work at the microphone with his band the John Powhida International Airport.

And the Roy Sludge Trio – featuring former Capital Region bassist Jim Haggerty – has picked up a nomination in the Album of the Year category for their recent release, “Too Drunk to Truck.”

Sludge and Haggerty will also be performing at the awards ceremony on Sunday evening. And sitting in for the night for the trio’s regular guitarist Duke Levine will be none other than Troy’s own red-hot guitarslinger (and Haggerty’s former Rocky Velvet bandmate) Graham Tichy.

Good luck, guys!

It’s an Honor Just to Be Nominated…

Congrats go out to Nippertown ex-pat John Powhida, who snagged a nomination in the Male Vocalist of the Year category from the Boston Music Awards.

Just last month, Powhida was at The Egg in Albany, leading an overdue reunion of the Staziaks at the Capital Area Indie Fest. And Powhida was also in town earlier this year leading his current band, John Powhida International Airport, at the Rockin’ on the River concert series in Troy, opening for Super 400.

In addition to Powhida, the other nominees for the Boston Music Awards’ Male Vocalist of the Year trophy are Ad Frank (of Ad Frank & the Fast Easy Women), Eli “Paperboy” Reed (of Eli “Paperboy” Reed & the True Loves), Jesse Dee and John McCauley (of Deer Tick).

Online public voting for the awards closes at 5pm on Monday, November 29.

The Boston Music Awards show will be held at the Liberty Hotel in Boston on Sunday, December 5. Tix are $20 and $99.

Live: Super 400 @ Rockin’ On the River, 8/11/10

Super 400 shares a laugh

Super 400 shares a laugh

Talent is an asset, and Super 400 has it spades!

Super 400 hit the Rockin’ on the River stage running, with the apropos “Blast the Message,” and clearly singer-guitarslinger Kenny Hohman was in rare form. The real fulcrum of the set featured a trio of songs – the hard rocking “Needle Down” into the dreamy “Green Grass End” which segued into the powerful pop of “Flashlight” – where Super 400 shifted to a gear found only on a Pagani Zonda supercar!

The Troy trio was nailing ’70s influences effortlessly on the hometown stage, from the big swing and perfect groove of drummer Joe Daley to the monster bass lines of Lori Friday, who also served up breathtakingly beautiful vocals along with feather-dancer stage moves. Playing well after sunset, the band went out on the heavy “Emergency,” with its King Crimson-meets-Masters of Reality blend and enlisted the vocal talent of opener John Powhida for a cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” A truly deserved encore then found J-Po rejoining Super 400 for a bang-on cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”
