Stellar Young rocked and rolled into McGeary’s Pub in Albany over Labor Day weekend to help wrap up Nippertown’s summer summer season with a bang. Adding to the musical fireworks, Woodstock guitar phenom Joey Eppard shared the stage.
As the unofficial mayor of Nippertown, I do hereby declare this to be Prog Rock Week! Yes, oh yes, this just might be the single most progressive-rock heavy week since the lamb first lied down on Broadway.
We start off with live-local, shred-national fretburner Mike Campese, who lands at Hot Shots in Glens Falls on Monday. The mighty, mighty guitar god Allan Holdsworth graces us with a performance at the GE Theatre at Proctors in Schenectady at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, sporting the A-list rhythm section of drummer Chad Wackerman and bassist Jimmy Johnson. Also on Tuesday, the one-man, mandolin-and-sequencer sonic assault team known as the Disposable Rocket Band blasts off at Valentine’s, opening the show for Steve Gaylord/Gay Tastee and the Destroying Angel.
The Big Bash implodes on Friday night – the Montreal-based prog-rock band/theater company the Musical Box, who have made a career out of slavishly recreating the music and live performances of (yes, let us all now bow down) Genesis. At the Mainstage at Proctors they’ll be firing up “A Trick of the Tail,” which sadly enough means that we’ll all be pining for the Peter Gabriel vibe bigtime. Nippertown prog heroes Fear of Flying launch the evening. Also on Friday, Brit power-metal juggernaut DragonForce breathes sonic fire at Northern Lights. Also blasting away at yer eardrums at NL will be the legendary Flordia prog-thrashers Cynic, who are back in the saddle once again.
And wrapping it all up on Saturday night at the Bearsville Theate in Woodstock, guitarmeister Joey Eppard melts his frets as hometown boys 3 pull back the curtains for a sneak preview of their new Metal Blade Records release. Just as cool, the Dear Hunter opens the show.
Oh my goodness gracious, honey, let’s slip into our silver platform boots and wrap those matching faux-silk scarves around our necks. Gas up the car. We got some shows to see…
