“It was ‘Penny Lane’ by the Beatles. I bought it for my girlfriend. I don’t even have it. I gave it away immediately.

But the first record that I bought for myself was probably ‘Walk Away Renee’ by the Left Banke. Yeah, that was the first one. I paid 74 cents for it.”

His playing has been heard on over 2,000 albums, garnering him 13 Grammy Awards, three Country Music Association’s Musician of the Year awards, a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association. Dobro master Jerry Douglas leads his band into Nippertown for two shows this week. At 8pm on Wednesday (August 6), he’ll step into the spotlight at Club Helsinki in Hudson ($30). And at 8pm on Friday (August 8), he’ll take over the Swyer Theatre at The Egg in Albany ($28).

Jerry Douglas, What Was the First (Christmas) Record You Ever Bought?

December 10th, 2009, 2:30 pm by Greg

JerryDouglas“I’m not sure what the first one I ever bought was, but the first one I remember listening to was the Gene Autry record with “Rudolph, The Red Nosed-Reindeer” on it. I’m sure of that.

The first one that I bought – if it wasn’t the Ventures one – was probably the Nat King Cole record. I’ve bought that one several times, and that just seems to me the ultimate Christmas memory-conjuring record.”

In support of his new Christmas album, “Jerry Christmas,” award-winning dobro master Jerry Douglas leads his band into The Egg in Albany on Friday (December 11) with special guest vocalists Maura O’Connell and John Oates (of Hall & Oates).

CD: Jerry Douglas’ “Jerry Christmas”

JerryDouglasChristmas(E1 Music, 2009):

Forget the jokey album title.

This is not only one of the very best new holiday music albums to hit the racks this year, but it’s a real keeper – one of those increasingly rare new Christmas albums that I’m sure I’ll be returning to year after year.

As you’d probably expect from Douglas – who’s won a gazillion awards for his ever-tasteful instrumental prowess and has been in the “special guest” seat with bands like Alison Krauss & Union Station, as well as Lyle Lovett in recent years – this is an acoustic album that doesn’t fit neatly into any particular pigeon-hole whatsoever.
