March 18th, 2011, 9:59 am by Greg

A new band is emerging on the Nippertown music scene this weekend. The Resonators will make their public debut at Jay’s Bar & Grill in Ballston Spa with a free show at 9pm on Saturday. The blues rock quartet digs into the repertoire of folks like BB King, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

The band is led by guitarist-vocalist Phil Drum, who also the driving force behind the Saratoga Acoustic Blues Society. Here’s Drum’s capsule report on the rest of the members of the Resonators:

Chris Guldner: bass, vocals – has played with George Fletcher and Bourbon Renewal, Tom Evan Blues Band and Bluesology

Sonny Speed: keyboards, vocals – has played for years downstate with bands such as the Defibrillators and Tornado Alley, came up to Saratoga a year ago and is already getting gigs with the likes of Garland Nelson and Ed Jahn

Fred Tripp: drums – has played with a host of local and national blues and rock bands, including Bourbon Renewal, Stony Creek Band and the George Boone Blues Band

Benefit Concert for Tony Perrino @ Jay’s Bar & Grill, 11/14/10

November 12th, 2010, 10:15 am by Greg

Blue Hand Luke

Blue Hand Luke: Pete Vumbaco, Tony Perrino, Joe Mele, Tommy Love, Luke McNamee, Charlie Morris, Jim Cappello

There’s a very special benefit this weekend for a really special guy.

Tony Perrino is the keyboard player with Blue Hand Luke, as well as several other bands in this area. He is also the head engineer at Tony’s Shack Studios in Greenfield Center. Just about every musician in the Capital District has recorded there at one time or another.

The past six months have been rough on Tony. He has had a couple of major operations and has lost income due to not being able to work.

There is good news, however. Tony is getting better, and recently he was well enough to rejoin Blue Hand Luke on a couple of gigs.

This Sunday (November 14), the musical community will be hosting a benefit for Tony at Jay’s Bar and Grill in Ballston Spa. Joining Blue Hand Luke will be such bands as Jocamo, Mantraz, the Penny Knight Band, the Killer B’s and many others. In addition, members of the Refrigerators and EB Jeb will be coming out for an all-star jam.

Please join us this Sunday at Jay’s Bar and Grill from 3pm til who knows when. All proceeds will go directly to helping Tony catch up on his medical bills.

Hope to see you there.

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … A Patsy Cline album. My dad was a hillbilly from West Virginia. When I was a little girl, he would play his guitar, and I would sing Patsy songs. When we would go to visit family in West Virginia, he would show me off. I remember singing at the “after funeral” party for my Grandmother when I was 12 years old. That party lasted three days. Those hillbillies really knew how to celebrate someone’s life.

Flashback: The Penny Knight Band, 1984

November 2nd, 2010, 3:01 pm by Greg

This week we’re digging deep into the vaults of “Real George’s Backroom,” Albany’s fabulous ’80s vintage cable television music show, for another blast from the past – the Penny Knight Band.

Led by singer-drummer Penny Knight, here the band kicks out a pair of tunes – “He’s a Faker” and “Jump Start My Heart” – that Real George captured live in 1984 at Easter Seals’ Parties in the Park. The free concerts were held in Albany’s West Capitol Park every Wednesday throughout the summer months:

But WAIT, here’s the best news…
