Award-winning poet Jayne Cortez and her son, drummer Denardo Coleman (of the Ornette Coleman Band), spit out words to live by on “Find Your Own Voice,” during last Saturday’s performance of “A Dialogue Between Voice and Drums” at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy:

Poetry + Percussion = Power

Award-winning poet Jayne Cortez has published 10 volumes of poetry, but she’s also fused her poetry together with music on nine recordings.

At 8pm on Saturday, Cortez takes the stage at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, accompanied by her son, the jazz drummer Denardo Coleman, of Ornette Coleman’s band, as well as Cortez’s band the Firespitters. The performance is titled “A Dialogue Between Voice and Drums.” Admission is $10.
