If you think the phrase “ukulele virtuoso” is an oxymoron, well, you’ve never heard the kind of instrumental magic that Jake Shimabukuro can make with a uke.

The 34-year-old Hawaiian native has been playing the ukulele for 30 years, but if this conjures up images of Don Ho, Arthur Godfrey or Tiny Tim, well, think again. These days, the uke seems to be everywhere.

“When I was growing up, my mom’s favorite record to listen to whenever she was cleaning the house was Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical.” To this day, every time I hear an Olivia Newton-John song, I want to take out a vacuum and start cleaning.”

Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro steps into the spotlight at The Egg in Albany at 8pm on Friday. Cape Verde singer Ilo Ferreira opens the show. Tix are $28.

If you still think of the ukulele as nothing more than a mere novelty instrument, give a listen to this Japanese uke virtuoso playing everything from Bach to Chick Corea to the Beatles to Michael Jackson without any studio trickery or overdubs.

Mind-boggling. Now that I’ve heard what this guy can do live, I can’t wait to see what he can do when Shimabukuro can do when he makes his Nippertown concert debut at the Music Haven in Schenectady’s Central Park on Sunday, June 28.
