Be Here Now: Legislative Idol @ Jillian’s

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Your vote counts!

The third annual Legislative Idol competition takes over Jillian’s in Albany as your lawmakers pick up the microphone to test their musical talents – all for the benefit of the Capital District Habitat for Humanity. Last year’s event raised about $5,000.

Hoping their performance doesn’t get a little too “pitchy” this year are NYS legislators Dan Burling, Jim Conte, Joseph Saladino, William Scarborough and Darryl Towns. Each contestant will be backed by the Dan Wray Band, and Senator Joe Robach will emcee the whole shebang.

Like “American Idol,” Legislative Idol has added a new judge to the panel – WMHT’s Susan Arbetter – who will join returning judges Wayne Jackson (Assembly Sergeant at Arms), Marilee King (of Zap Legislative Courier Service) and Paul “F. Lee Harvey Blotto” Rapp (Metroland columnist, entertainment attorney and one hell of a private pilot).

Assemblyman William Parment – the winner of last year’s sing-off with his original song, “Billy and the State Thruway,” based on the Kingston trio’s oldie “Charlie on the MTA” – will present the winner with the championship trophy based on volume of audience applause.

Parment will also be playing harmonica – is that known as paying lip service? – in the Budget Blues Boys (also including legislators Richard Brodsky-keys, Dennis Gabryszak-gtr and Idol contestant Saladino-drms), who will crank out some classic tunes following the competition.

The evening begins at 8:30pm with the Dan Wray Band, and the Legislative Idol competition gets underway at 9pm. Suggested donation at the door is $10.
