Roaring into Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs, the Crescent City’s Revivalists churned out a genre-hopping sound that rounded out traditional rock instrumentation with horns and pedal steel guitar and a healthy dose of steamy funk trademark from the band’s hometown of New Orleans.

And last Saturday night, the Saratoga acoustic blues duo Low ‘N Lonesome and their friends traced the history of the blues from the ’20s to the dawn of rock & roll in a sprawling, across-the-years concert at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts in Averill Park.

Performing to a packed house last Friday the 13th, Holly & Evan invited whiz kids Ted Hennessy, Barry Hyman and Josh Greenberg to share the stage for an evening of hot, searing, foot-stomping blues. The Brunswick Barbecue & Brew on Route 2 in Brunswick is a favorite venue among local musicians – owner Gary “Goose” Gosselin and bartender James Colborn have created the perfect atmosphere – and when the musicians are having a good time, everyone wins.

First Night Saratoga

Photographs by Andrzej Pilarczyk, Nippertown chief photographer

New Year’s Eve in Saratoga Springs has become quite the Nippertown tradition, and for music fans, there’s certainly no shortage of things to do. Just about every kind of musical style was in the air somewhere around town during the annual First Night Saratoga celebration. All total, there were more than 70 performances and happenings taking place at nearly three dozen different performance venues.

Obviously, we couldn’t get to all of them, but here’s a sampling of what Nippertown chief photographer Andrzej Pilarczyk saw during his trek through the final moments of 2011:
