Sometimes you’ll find her behind the bar at the Low Beat serving up cold brews. And sometimes Meg Duffy steps out from behind the bar, grabs her guitar, steps onto the no-pepper stage to serve up some mesmerizing music with her band, Hand Habits. That was the case one night last month when Hand Habits topped a whopping four-band bill, that also featured Free Cake for Every Creature, Bellows and Eskimeaux.

Song o’ the Week: Hand Habits’ “Be Yr Man”

February 25th, 2014, 2:00 pm by Greg

Hmmm, not too small…
And not too big…
Ah yes, it’s that perfect 10-inch piece of vinyl, just right for the swirling dream-pop of Meg Duffy’s Hand Habits.

And Hand Habits’ new 10-incher could be in your hot little hands right now… at least digitally speaking. It’s a split EP with Peg, the new side-project band from Avi Buffalo drummer Sheridan Riley. Peg’s four-song side of the disc is titled Living With Abbreviation, while Hand Habits’ two-song side – featuring “Be Yr Man” and “Bloom” – is dubbed Small Shifts. (And that begs the question – If it’s only two songs, is it really an EP? Or just a single with both songs on the same side of the disc?)

Either way, the package is being released today (Tuesday, February 25) by the fine folks at Eschatone Records as a digital download (on itunes and other download sites), as well as in a vinyl limited edition of just 125 copies featuring two front covers, each signed by its respective artist, and includes a sheet of liner notes. In addition, vinyl purchase also includes a download of both the Peg and Hand Habits audio.

And you can check out Hand Habits live at Skidmore College’s Falstaff’s in Saratoga Springs at 9:30pm on Friday (February 28) with Soft Powers (FREE), as well as at 8pm on Saturday night (March 1) at Albany’s Hollow Bar + Kitchen with Northern Faces and MaryLeigh Roohan ($10).
