Today marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of pop singer Gene Pitney, and in honor of the occasion, here’s a vintage clip of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer belting out one of his best tunes, “Town Without Pity”:
Pitney has always been one of my favorite singers. He’s got great range and an undeniably impassioned delivery. He’s also probably the only singer in history to have recorded duets with both George Jones and Soft Cell’s Marc Almond.
Pitney died in 2006 while on tour in the UK. At his final concert performance, he earned a standing ovation when he closed his show with “Town Without Pity.”
