Submissions are now being accepted for the fourth annual “Garage to Glory” battle of the bands, which will take place at the College of Saint Rose’s Jack’s Place in Albany on Friday, April 12.

Simply fill out the entry form, send along a photograph and post a video of your band performing an original song. The video must be an unedited, single-camera shoot.

The third annual Garage to Glory competition has moved into the second round with the announcement of a dozen semi-final bands. All 12 bands have posted a music video for one of their original songs on the Garage to Glory website, and readers are encouraged to view the videos and vote for their favorites. You can vote for as many as five bands.

A panel of judges will decide four of the five finalists. Only the fifth band to go to the finals will be determined by the public online voting.

You may remember last year about this time, The Times Union teamed up with the College of Saint Rose to co-sponsor a battle of the bands, which they dubbed Garage to Glory.

Well, The TU announced today that they’re doing it again this spring, but instead of a battle of the bands, this time around, Garage to Glory II is going to be a showdown of singer-songwriters.


Try Sarah Topps Tops Garage to Glory Battle

Try Sarah Topps emerged as the grand prize winners of the Garage to Glory battle of the bands on Friday night, edging out the other four finalists – Saving Atlantis, the Ill Funk Ensemble, 3MinutePop! and the Providers.

Co-sponsored by the College of Saint Rose and The Times Union, the final round of competition took place at Saint Rose on Friday evening, where each band had 15 minutes in the spotlight to impress the panel of judges.

Formed a half and a half ago at Saint Rose, the indie/progressive rock quintet Try Sarah Topps features vocalist Kyle Albano, guitarists Jared Dirolf and Gary Ljungquist, bassist Frank McNenney and drummer Kevin O’Connell. The band is slated to play the annual spring festival Rose Rock on the Saint Rose campus on Saturday, April 24.

As the Garage to Glory winners, TST will receive an EP Master CD, a Sennheiser wireless microphone system, a music performance video filmed at Saint Rose, four hours of professional design services for the CD cover art and a profile story in The Times Union.
