The fourth annual FreshGrass festival was a rousing success at MASS MoCA in North Adams last month. It’s truly amazing how quickly the festival has grown since its debut in 2011 when only a few hundred fans were in attendance.

Of course, much of its success has to do with the stellar line-up that graced the three main stages of the museum’s grounds. This year the three-day bluegrass and roots music festival featured a mind-bending amount of music, with more than 40 bands throughout the weekend, including Emmylou Harris, Railroad Earth, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, Sam Bush, Hurray for the Riff Raff, the Infamous Stringdusters, Valerie June, the Duhks, Alison Brown, the David Grisman Sextet, Sam Amidon, Cricket Tell the Weather, the Novel Ideas, the Flying Garbanzos and many, many more.

FreshGrass Award Winner Announced

September 23rd, 2013, 10:00 am by Greg

The third annual FreshGrass festival took place at MASS MoCA last weekend, and it was the first time that the fest bestowed the FreshGrass Award upon an up-and-coming bluegrass band. The final round of competition was held at MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center on Sunday morning (September 22) as Deadly Venoms, the Vickie Vaughn Band, Cricket Tell the Weather, Molly Tuttle, John Mailander & Ethan Jodziewicz, the Lonely Heartstring Band and Chasing Blue faced off for top honors.

When it was all over, the Brooklyn-based Cricket Tell the Weather walked off with the first FreshGrass Award, which includes $5000, a Nashville recording session at Compass Records and a slot at next year’s FreshGrass Festival.

In addition to its cutting edge visual art exhibits, MASS MoCA in North Adams has become a formidable regional presenter of a wide-array of musical events, including, of course Wilco’s wonderful Solid Sound Festival. Last weekend, the museum complex presented FreshGrass: A Festival of Bluegrass & Art featuring some of the most popular bluegrass-and-beyond artists, from the Infamous Stringdusters (who topped the Saturday night schedule) to Sunday’s closer the Yonder Mountain String Band.

In fact, the fest featured two days of fine, up-and-upcoming musicians – including Sarah Jarosz, Ramblin Jug Stompers, Dave Mayfield, Crooked Still’s Aoife O’Donovan and the Hackensaw Boys – performing at a variety of different venues scattered throughout MASS MoCA’s sprawling campus.

Festival Fever: FreshGrass Festival @ MASS MoCA, 9/24-25/11

September 20th, 2011, 2:00 pm by Greg

It might seem a bit odd to find one of the nation’s finest contemporary art museums hosting a bluegrass music festival. But MASS MoCA is certainly no ordinary museum, and they’ve certainly proven their festival savvy by presenting two sparkling editions of Wilco’s fab Solid Sound Music Festival.

This weekend the North Adams museum is celebrating bluegrass music with the two-day FreshGrass : A Festival of Bluegrass & Art, featuring such headlining bands as the Yonder Mountain String Band, the Infamous Stringdusters and the bluegrass master Del McCoury (just four days before he’s inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame).
