It’s Pre-Phantogram Day!

Monday, February 8th, 2010

OK, we admit it. Phantogram rolled into town last Friday for a show at Northern Lights in Clifton Park. And that just whetted our whistle for more.

Now we just can’t wait til tomorrow.

Nippertown’s own electro-duo supreme Phantogram takes a huge step forward tomorrow with the release of their new album, “Eyelid Movies,” on the buzzworthy indie label, Barsuk Records.

If you just can’t wait til then, you can stream the entire album today at NPR, where “All Songs Considered” host Bob Boilen describes his first encounter with Saratoga’s dynamic dance-pop duo at the CMJ convention in NYC last fall: “I went, I saw, I loved.”

The album is already available for pre-order, of course, at places like iTunes and Amazon.

Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter thank you for your support.

Real Good For Free: Free Downloads

Monday, December 14th, 2009

I’ve been a little busy putting Nippertown together this year and I haven’t had much time to work on music, so I’m pleased to announce that I’ve got some new album downloads available and they’re free:

SCOCoverStar Crossed Others is the first release from what I hope will be an ongoing collaboration with Oleg Gaponov and Oleg Tolstolutsky of Rostov-on-Don, Russia. These contemporary songs and meditations on time, memory and loss are flavored with the rich musical traditions of the Cossacks, ranging from straight-ahead folk-rock to exotic sound collages. You can download the album here. The two Olegs are accomplished multi-instrumentalists with rich musical resumes; their current band is Don Romance, a project that sets the lyrics of exiled Cossack poets to new, traditional music.

AmbientCollaborationsCoverI’m also pleased to announce that Nathan Larson’s Endless Ascent netlabel has released Sara Ayers: Ambient Collaborations, a compilation of ambient works I’ve created over the past ten years with stellar musicians from around the world, including Ryuta.K, Falling You, Jeff Sampson, Mindspawn, Nebula Drone and Star Crossed Others. Sonically, it’s all over the map as well, with pieces ranging from wistful, barely-there motifs to dark and wailing walls of sound. This release is a free download as well, although if you enjoy it, you might make a small donation to Nathan, who has been offering free album downloads of unconventional music gems since 2002, to help support his web hosting costs.

KyzylCoverAaaaaannnd, a special bonus: Last year, I released Kyzyl to Samarkand, a collaboration with Japanese dark ambient experimentalist Ryuta.K. Now Ryu and I have agreed to offer it as a free download. The music of this 51-minute, 5-song project is foreboding, ethereal, plaintive and dense; diaphanous vocals float over surreal beds of field recordings, molten noise and nervous guitars, evoking the sound of an ominous yet ecstatic journey on a pan-Asian silk road.

Real Good for Free: Phil Drum @ Virgil’s House, 12/12/09

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Phil Drum, singer, guitarist and head honcho of the Saratoga Acoustic Blues Society, is whipping up a special acoustic Christmas show at 3pm Saturday (December 12) at Virgil’s House, a great little coffeehouse at 86 Henry St. in Saratoga Springs. Actually, it’s more than just a coffeehouse, sporting a considerable menu of good food, as well as a beer and wine license.

“I’ll be playing lots of Christmas and winter songs,” Drum explains, “songs by everyone from Blind Lemon Jefferson to Frank Sinatra. So stop by for some music, good food and drink, and a break from the holiday shopping madness.”

Admission is free, but donations to the Saratoga Acoustic Blues Society will gratefully be accepted, and Drum promises to bring along a few SABS hats for sale, too – a great present for the blues fan on your holiday list.

Real Good for Free: CRUMBS Nite Out @ The Linda, 12/10/09

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Heads up!

The big upcoming holiday tends to wreak havoc with a lot of monthly schedules, including CRUMBS Nite Out. The free concert ‘n’ panel discussion typically takes place on the last Thursday of each month at The Linda in Albany, but Christmas has shuffled the deck, and instead the Nite Out will take place on Thursday (December 10).

The featured performers this month are Three Quarter North, who are utilizing the evening to celebrate the release of their debut CD, “North by Northeast.” The acoustic quartet fuses together folk, bluegrass, jug band and country music, but their repertoire also dips into the songbags of Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead.

Showtime for Three Quarter North is 7pm Thursday, but the doors open at 6pm to allow time for some pre-show music community networking.

Real Good for Free: Guitar Wars, the Grand Finale

Monday, December 7th, 2009

The battle lines have been drawn, and now it’s all coming down to one big last showdown, as the final night of Q103’s Guitar Wars competition takes place at Revolution Hall in Troy at 7pm on Thursday (December 10).

Eight of the area’s top musicians will battle it out for bragging rights as Nippertown’s best guitarslinger and top honors in Guitar Wars. The winner will receive the grand prize of a $10,000 limited edition Yuengling/Martin guitar.

The eight finalists are:

Albie Von Schaaf (of the Black Fuel/These Are the Hits)
Rob Guerin
Chuck Valentine (of Road to Galway)
George Catanzal
Dallas Sheppard
Steve White
Mat Kane (of Disposable Rocket Band)
Kaitee Page (of Lunic)

The finalists were selected in earlier rounds of the competition at such Albany music venues as Tess’ Lark Tavern, Savannah’s and the Bayou Cafe.

As you might expect, most of the finalists are playing electric guitars, but Rob Guerin plays dazzlingly on his acoustic guitar, and just to make things really interesting, Mat Kane and Kaitee Page don’t even play guitar.

That’s right, early in the competition, Guitar Wars organizers decided not to limit the contest to guitarists, but to open it up to all stringed instrument players. And that allowed electric mandolinist Mat Kane and electric violinist Kaitee Page to enter the competition and earn a berth in Thursday’s finals. So you can bet that this is going to be an exciting night.

Admission is free, so come on down and show your support.
