It’s been almost exactly one year since the release of Formula 5’s sophomore album Edging on Catastrope.
Now the Local 518 jam-band faves are slated to roll into the Hollow Bar + Kitchen in Albany on Saturday night (April 18) in celebration of their new album Live Five, Vol. 1. And to up the ante and make the evening extra special, the band will be joined by the Chronicles’ horn section of Bryan Brundidge and Jeff Nania.
Following in the footsteps of their 2009 debut So Far So Good and their solid sophomore album No Questions asked, Gaudet and his band are back with their first album since the addition of fab fiddler Mat Kane, and no question about it, it’s the band’s best outing to date.
The 13-song disc features a blend of bluegrass, Cajun, blues, story songs, an instrumental, a murder ballad and a goodbye waltz, as well as a pair of unexpected covers – Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life” and the 1961 hit for the Marathons, “Peanut Butter.”
Showtime is 8pm tonight, and admission is $15. And as part of the celebration, Reasons That I Run will be available tonight at a $5 discount from the regular price.
Meanwhile, on Saturday night (March 2), Albany funk-based jam band Formula 5 is throwing a party at Red Square in Albany to celebrate the release of their self-titled debut album. The band will be bolstering its already powerhouse solid with the addition of a horn section featuring trombonist Bryan Brundige and saxman Jeff Nania, both on loan from the Local 518 jazz fusion group the Chronicles. The festivities will kick off at 9pm with an opening set from Buffalo-based band Funktional Flow.

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … first album. summer between eighth and ninth grade I bought Led Zeppelin’s “How the West Was Won”. It was so powerful. I learned so much from John Bonham. He gave me the foundation for my playing.
