Review by Greg Haymes

I’ve loved Flogging Molly ever since I first heard them at the one and only Vans Warped Tour to grace Nippertown – at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta a dozen years ago. They were whippin’ it up on a small stage about as far from the main entrance entrance as you could get. And while 90 percent of the other bands on the fest were stirring up the usual paint-by-numbers mosh-pit soundtrack, frontman-bandleader Dave King and his mates were mixing up their full-throttle Celtic punk anthems with an occasional Guinness-soaked waltz and even a cover of Welshman Tom Jones’ “Delilah.” I was sold.

And while last month’s FM show at the Palace Theatre in Albany was good, it fell short of great.

“I’ve been listening a lot to the new Tom Waits record (“Bad as Me”). I listen to it like crazy, like five times a day.”

Matthew Hensley straps on his accordion and joins his bandmates in Flogging Molly for a guaranteed rollicking good time at the Palace Theatre in Albany at 8pm on Saturday (June 16). Nippertown faves Wild Adriatic open the show. Tix are $24.50 & $29.50.

LIVE: Flogging Molly @ Northern Lights, 2/20/11

February 25th, 2011, 3:15 pm by Greg

I’d seen Flogging Molly live twice before – at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta on the 2000 Van Warped Tour and again at the Altamont Fairgrounds for the 2007 Irish 2000 Music and Arts Festival.

Both performances were devastatingly good.

But in the relatively cozy confines of Northern Lights in Clifton Park last week, the seven-piece California Celtic rockers brought it to a whole other level in front of a jam-packed, sold-out crowd. The band’s outdoor festival outings were fun, to be sure, but at Northern Lights, their boundless energy didn’t dissipate into the night air – it just continued to bounce around the room, seemingly building bigger and bigger as it absorbed the Guinness-soaked energy of the fans, too, who were clearly enjoying one very righteous party.

Dave King, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

“I remember the first album that I ever heard … that was ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ by Johnny Cash and ‘The Dubliners Live at the Gate Theater.’ They were the first albums that I ever heard.

But the first album that I ever bought? That might have been something by Slade or somebody like that. Yeah, I think it might have been Slade. Or maybe T. Rex.”

Dave King and his bandmates in the Celtic punk band Flogging Molly roar into Northern Lights in Clifton Park at 7:30pm on Sunday. Opening the show will be Moneybrother and the Drowning Men. Tix are $25. UPDATE: Sunday’s show is now SOLD OUT.
