No doubt about it. Composer, singer, pianist and showman extraordinaire Elton John is a superstar. And his recent visit to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center proved it once again in spades.

Piano Men Postponed…Again

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Keyboard kings Elton John and Billy Joel have postponed their upcoming Albany concert – for the second time.

The Face 2 Face Tour was originally slated to roll into the Times Union Center on Monday, July 27, but it was postponed do to Billy Joel’s illness. After much delay, it was finally re-scheduled for Monday, December 7. Now that date has been cancelled, and the concert has been re-scheduled for next year.

According to Pollstar, “Illness is the culprit. At first it was only John’s health causing postponements of the tour’s first few dates. But almost as soon as John recovered from a bout of flu mixed with an E. coli infection, co-headline partner Joel took sick.”

The new date for the concert is Thursday, March 11, 2010 – which means that it will have been a full year since tickets first went on sale for the concert back in March, 2009.

Edgar Meyer, What Was the First Album That You Ever Bought?

“It would have been Elton John probably. Yeah, the one with ‘Candle in the Wind.’ What was that called? Right, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.’

You see, my father had an extensive collection, so the first ones that I bought were popular music. But I grew up with a wonderful classical and jazz collection, and that’s my first attachment. When I bought them for myself, the first thing that I bought was some Elton John record, I believe, when I was in the seventh or eighth grade.

I guess the point that I’m trying to make is that that was very late in my personal development because I was so involved with music from such a young age. And my father’s collection really sufficed for a long time.”

Classical and bluegrass composer-bassist Edgar Meyer teams up with banjo master Bela Fleck and tabla wizard Zakir Hussain for an innovative evening of adventurous music at The Egg in Albany on Saturday, October 3.

Elton & Billy @ the TUC?

eltonJohnBillyJoelOK, that big Elton John-meets-Billy Joel concert at the Times Union Center? It was supposed to happen a month ago, but it was “postponed” due to Joel’s exhaustion.

Yes, a full month ago, and a new date for the show still hasn’t been announced. Good thing we’re not holding our breath…

Don’t Be Here Now: No John/Joel tonight

Monday, July 27th, 2009

With Billy Joel sidelined by extreme fatigue and flu-like symptoms, tonight’s Face 2 Face concert with Billy Joel and Elton John at the Times Union Center has been postponed.

And that’s undoubtedly very good news for SPAC, which should see a significant jump in lawn ticket sales for tonight’s Coldplay concert.

No new date for the John/Joel concert has been announced yet, but I just loved the way that a television newscaster over the weekend advised ticketholders, “Don’t throw those tickets away.” Gee, no foolin’. I just paid $177 for a ticket, but I shouldn’t throw it away?

Anyway, I don’t see why Sir Elton didn’t just snag one of the guys from Nippertown’s real dueling-keyboards concert of the week – Dr. John and Al Kooper at The Egg last Saturday – and do the concert tonight anyway. They could have billed it as The Two Johns: Elton-meets-Dr.
