Ellis Paul, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

“I think it was probably a Maynard Ferguson album because when I was in high school, I played trumpet. It probably had nothing to do with where I’m at now.

And I bought a few Billy Joel albums back in the early ’80s, but I never really dove into the singer-songwriter realm until I was about 20 years old and discovered Dylan, James Taylor, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.”

Singer-songwriter Ellis Paul steps into the spotlight at Columbia Greene Community College in Hudson at 7pm Saturday for the cornerstone concert of the fifth annual Hudson Valley Songfest & Music Expo. Andy Pratt opens the show. Admission is $20.

Caffe Lena Photo of the Day

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

This weekend Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs is celebrating its 50th anniversary, making it the longest-running, continuously operating coffeehouse in America.

We joining in the celebration by publishing one photo each day this month culled from the vast archives of the Caffe’s soundman supreme and house photographer Joe Deuel.

Here’s one of our favorite of Joe’s shots, showing singer-songwriter Ellis Paul at the piano during soundcheck for a 2005 performance. It’s a beautiful, moody shot that perfectly captures the intimacy and magic of the coffeehouse before the doors are opened:
