Building an “Electrical Forest”

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

electricalForestInstallation artist Noah Fischer is launching a new project this fall at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy. “Electrical Forest: Made in Troy” will be a dense constellation of fell trees, surrogate trees, handmade leaves, leafy projections and textures of sound and light. Fischer will use myriad recycled detritus found in Troy in an effort to make an inclusive forest, where fragments from all walks of life have a place in the ecosystem.

A major component of the project is a factory phase, and the Arts Center is seeking volunteers. Leaf-making production lines will be operating in the Arts Center’s main gallery from Saturday, October 24 through Troy Night Out on Friday, October 30. The goal is to create 10,000 individual leaves out of translucent acetate and color gel paints. Ultimately, your creations will form a stain-glass-like canopy of leaves above Fischer’s electro-mechanic bio-network. Teachers and other groups are encouraged to participate. Individual drop-ins are welcome, too.

Fischer will build the Electrical Forest in early November, and the installation will open to the public later that month.
