Once again, Discard Avant Garb’s charity fundraising Recycled Fashion Show outdid itself.

Each year, we walk out after the show thinking, “Well, they won’t be able to top that next year.” And every year, they do just that.

It’s Nippertown’s hippest and most fun annual art party – at least we hope it’s annual again after taking a year off in 2010. While the party at Grand Street Community Arts in Albany went on for about three and a half hours, the fashion show itself lasted only 50 minutes. But what a wild and wonderful 50 minutes they were.

With Chris Harvey’s hot-green bamboo installation and an array of Dennis Herbert’s surreal box assemblages serving as a backdrop, the never-demure Mary Panza once again served as Emcee from Hell, detailing the recycled ingredients of each outfit and often chastising the models as they strutted their stuff upon the runway.

The Discard Avant Garb took a year off last year, which only makes us more excited about their long-awaited return to the runway again on Saturday.

Why? Because it’s the art party of the year, that’s why.

Discard Avant Garb presents its 11th recycled fashion show at 6pm on Saturday (September 10) at Grand Street Community Arts in Albany.

So what is it? Well, DAG invites artists to create costumes using recycled and/or non-traditional materials. The pieces are then presented in a fashion show format. In recent years, artist/designers have handcrafted entire head-to-toe ensembles from bottlecaps. Or weeds. Or umbrellas. Or stray socks. Or coffee filters.

As David Johansen says, it’s “funky but chic.”

Co-founders of DAG Roxanne Storms, Helen Martin, Val P. Funk and Molly Suwara keep things fresh and exciting, bringing in new artists each year to strut their stuff, alongside returning favorites. This year, more than 30 artist/designers will showcase their unique, one-of-a-kind wearable artworks. Three of them – Amy Orr, Katie Prey and Mischel Nivens – are being featured with spotlight slots in the show.

Earlier this month, Discard Avant Garb celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Recycled Fashion Show at the Grand Street Community Arts Center in Albany.

It was, to say the least, the artistic social event of the semester with a runway extravaganza of incredibly cool fashions created from discarded, recycled items.

OK, we freely admit that we don’t know much about fashion, but we sure do love Discard Avant Garb‘s annual recycled fashion show. Since the first bash back at the late great QE2, the event has been as much about imagination as any art exhibition around town, and let’s face it, these folks know how to throw a party, too.

All proceeds from the Recycled Fashion Show event go to charity. This year, proceeds will also be distributed to two more recipients: The Tom Nattell Peace Poetry Prize Fund and the Grand Street Community Arts Center.

Among the more than 30 Nippertown artist/designers who are creating unique, one-of-a-kind fashions for the 10th anniversary bash are Roxanne Storms, Helen Martin, Val P. Funk, Lillian Mulero, A.C. Everson, Alex Albino, Jimmy Cassaro, MotherJudge, Colleen Fraser Skiff, Joleen M. Button, Roberta Lawrence, Hadiya Wilborn, Oakley Hall III, Stephanie Martin and Ericka Klein.
