Diego Garcia – the former lead singer with Elefant – has found a home-away-from-home here in Nippertown. Tirelessly championed by WEXT-FM, Garcia made a number of Local 518 concert appearances – beginning with LarkFest in 2012 – in support of his debut solo album, Laura.

Despite a steady and, at times, heavy rain, Diego Garcia and his band played the Music Haven in Schenectady’s Central Park last Sunday, and the crowd responded with swooning enthusiasm – particularly during a sing-a-long on “All Eyes On You” and several other songs which have received heavy airplay on local station WEXT-FM.

Love songs, love songs, nothing but love songs…

Yeah, it sounds like the recipe for a really bad MOR radio station, doesn’t it?

But it’s also quite an apt description of Diego Garcia’s performance last month at The Linda in Albany. And there was absolutely nothing cheesy about it at all.

He crooned, and we swooned. The devastatingly handsome and relentlessly charming Garcia – imagine an alt-Latin incarnation of Bryan Ferry – made his Albany debut last September at LarkFest, and that performance obviously made quite an impression on him. “This is our first show in Albany,” he said at The Linda, a sly grin spreading across his face. “The first one you’ll remember, anyway. You guys were soooooooo drunk at LarkFest…”

Diego Garcia

NAME: Diego Garcia
INSTRUMENT: voice and guitar

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”

2. THE FIRST CONCERT THAT I EVER SAW WAS … U2’s “Achtung Baby” tour – Zoo TV at the Tampa Stadium. I wanted so badly to be Bono afterwards.

3. THE FIRST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT I EVER OWNED OR PLAYED WAS … My mom’s beat up Spanish-style guitar. She brought it with her from Argentina and never really played it after having kids.

4. THE FIRST SONG THAT I EVER PERFORMED IN PUBLIC WAS … Iggy Pop’s “My Dog.” Note: Whenever played, this song would incite a riot.

5. THE FIRST BAND I WAS EVER IN WAS … Engine. Again, we basically covered the Stooges.

Following his acclaimed Nippertown debut at LarkFest in September, Diego Garcia returns to town at 8pm on Friday (January 27) for a concert at The Linda in Albany in support of his debut solo album, “Laura.” Tix are $15.
