Michael Eck and Tom Lindsay, that intrepid Lost Radio Rounders duo, celebrated the release of their first official studio recording, Hard Trials, at a Guilderland charity concert last Friday.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I’m a long-time friend of Tom Lindsay, and I designed LRR’s three most recent CDs. But living four hours away from the duo’s stomping grounds (and preferring, it must be admitted, quirky, plugged-in pop-rock rather than guitar-plucking acoustic Americana), I had not seen the band perform until this event.

Naturally, the show featured several tunes from Hard Trials, and since the album centers on the themes of death and loss, one might have expected a dark and somber evening. Instead, the show displayed a wide range of emotions, from contemplative (the lullaby “That’s All Right”) to foot-stomping (“Jesus on the Mainline”) to silly fun (“The Man Who Rode the Mule Around the World”). Festivities were wrapped up with a rousing rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Lindsay and Eck know how to structure a set list that keeps the listener interested, engaged and singing along.
