Happy Birthday, Dave Clark

Looking back at it now, it’s nearly impossible to believe that there were serious arguments about who was the better band: the Beatles or the Dave Clark Five.

While the Beatles have gone on to become, well, the iconic Beatles, the legacy of the Dave Clark Five has been reduced to little more than footnote in rock and roll history. Even British Invasion bands like Herman’s Hermits are better known to contemporary rock audiences than the Dave Clark Five.

Too bad. Here’s to you, Dave. Happy 68th birthday, and keep on stompin’…

Pat Metheny, What Was The First Record You Ever Bought?

June 16th, 2009, 2:08 pm by Greg

“I remember the first single that I bought – `Because’ by the Dave Clark Five. I was seven years old, and I saved up my money from mowing the lawn three weeks in a row to do it.

“I was a total Beatles freak, but I sort of dug all of that music. And there was something about that tune in particular… I can’t remember exactly what it was, but I remember that was the tune that I wanted to buy.”

Metheny will be playing with the Gary Burton Quartet Revisited at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, Mass. on Friday, June 19 and at the Freihofer’s Jazz Festival at SPAC on Saturday, June 27.
