“Same music I listened to as a kid… old blues records. Lightnin’ Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf. Sometimes I listen to Derek Trucks just to be intimidated. What a stunning guitarist he is.”

Dave Alvin and his band, the Guilty Ones, rumble into Club Helsinki in Hudson at 8pm on Sunday. Los Straitjackets share the stage. Tix are $20. Dave Alvin & the Guilty Ones are also slated to perform at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton at 7pm on Tuesday, June 21. Tix are $20 in advance; $25 at the door.

LIVE: Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, 7/17

July 20th, 2009, 9:36 am by Greg

Along with Bettye LaVette’s performance at Freihofer’s Jazz Festival at SPAC last month, this has got to rank as the best show of the summer so far.

In explaining the title of the band’s album – which is simply “Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women” – Alvin announced, “Oh, it took us five minutes to come up with that title. ‘Disraeli Gears’ was already taken.”

And during the introduction to the final encore of the night, Alvin declared, “The secret of life is contained in this song by the great existential philosopher, Doris Day.”
