The true blue Flurry fans weren’t about to let some snow flurries get in the way of a jam-packed weekend of singing and dancing, of playing and listening to music that makes you want to kick up your heels. And while there was a snow emergency in effect throughout Saratoga Springs, the spirit was warm and welcoming at more than a dozen indoor venues that hosted a wide variety of Flurry events, from concerts to dance parties to workshops.

Festival Fever: Dance Flurry Festival in Saratoga Springs This Weekend

February 13th, 2013, 4:00 pm by Greg

Get Happy Feet!

Yes, it’s once again time for the annual Dance Flurry Festival to take over downtown Saratoga Springs for three days of nearly non-stop music, dancing and workshops.

Of course, you don’t have to love dancing in order to enjoy the Dance Flurry. In fact, you can just sit back and listen to a whole bunch of fabulous music without ever kicking up your heels.

Taking place at a wide assortment of venues throughout Saratoga Springs all weekend long, the fest gets underway at 7pm on Friday with music from Quickstep, Jay Ungar & Molly Mason, Tamarack, Batty & the Baby Boomers, the Sweetback Sisters and more.

Saturday’s session is the motherlode with music and dancing starting at 9am and running straight through ’til 1am at 16 different locations around town – workshops, dance instruction, concerts, dance parties, storytelling, kids’ activities and lots, lots more. It starts all over again at 9am on Sunday before things finally wind down at 6pm Sunday.

There are gazillions of great things to do and see and hear at the Dance Flurry Festival. Here are just a few suggestions:

25th Annual Dance Flurry Festival @ Saratoga City Center (and other places), 2/19/12

Review and photographs by J Hunter

Here’s some truly sage advice: Never, ever let people you dislike talk to you at length about something THEY like – because if you’re a barely-guided missile like myself, you’ll probably let your feelings darken your already-uninformed opinion. That was the way it was for me and the Dance Flurry, the festival of the dance that’s become an annual bright spot in Saratoga Springs’ winter. So when it was suggested the three-day fete might work as a column (or, at least, motivation for a really good rant), I remembered the guy who spoke ad nauseum about how The Flurry was the greatest thing since sliced bread and internet porn, and how I wanted to club him senseless with a birch tree. And then I remembered some more sage advice, this time from the late great Hunter S. Thompson: “Even a blind pig finds an acorn if he roots around long enough.” So I put my animosity in a blind trust and headed up the Northway.

Review by Bokonon

“Some can’t dance and I guess I’m just one of the unfortunate few…”

Thus spake Tom T. Hall, describing me to a…well…T.

But you don’t need to dance to enjoy the Dance Flurry, especially since the annual festival books all sorts of concerts, workshops and jams that have nothing to do with the old soft shoe.
