In spite of the unpredictable weather, the annual two-day Clearwater Great Hudson River Revival at Croton Point Park offered a little something for everyone.

Among the many highlights of the fest were:

The family-friendly sing-alongs with the Power of Song and Linda Richards & the Rivertown Kids
The superb singer-songwriter stylings of Ani DiFranco and Neko Case
The classic roots rock of Los Lobos and David Crosby
Former B-52’s Kate Pierson who performed with Mike + Ruthy as members of her back-up band…
The world music of Angelique Kidjo and Matuto
Representatives of the indie rock scene Guster and Citizen Cope
The husband-and-wife banjo virtuoso duo of Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn

It was another year of fine performances. Looking forward to 2016!

The fabled annual Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival Festival means a lot of different things to thousands of different people who attend each and every year. For some, it’s all about the music. For others, it’s little about that and a lot more.

What else, you ask?

Well, it’s about community. It’s about activism. In other words, it’s about life, being a citizen, about being a person of substance. That means being involved in your community, in your country’s problems and being a part of those who are trying to offer a solution to those problems.

Billed as a “Music & Environmental Festival,” Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival is an annual, family-oriented gathering. The festival’s socio-political-environmental agendas bring needed attention not only to the revitalization of the Hudson River, but also to solar & green energy use, organic & natural food, zero waste, recycling, etc.

It’s the music, however, that brings in the crowds for the two-day affair. With music issuing forth nearly non-stop on seven stages spread throughout the grounds, the festival musicians offered up a potpourri of musical genres that ranged from the progressive bluegrass of the Punch Brothers featuring mandolin master Chris Thile to the Cajun dance music of Louisiana’s Jesse Lege & Bayou Brew.

Musicians and the community coming together to save and celebrate the Hudson River – that is the essence of the annual Clearwater Great Hudson River Revival, a family-friendly festival which has been held annually since 1978.

This year’s event was a celebration of musical milestones – the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie and the 50th anniversary of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

“Clearwater Generations” was the theme of the 33rd annual Clearwater Hudson River Revival Folk Festival at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson. The festival showcased some of America’s greatest folk music families performing both together and separately. Also featured were over 100 other musical acts, playing music that ranged from children’s songs and sea shanties to free jazz, indie rock and rap. And it was all spread across five stages, a storytelling area and sing-along area over the course of two days.

Peter Yarrow presented the more traditional side of folk music. His daughter Bethany appeared with her band the Bethany and Rufus Roots Quartet playing a wild amalgam of roots music from America, Haiti and Niger.

Arlo Guthrie played a solo set and, as usual, told his amusing stories to introduce such oldies as “ Coming into Los Angeles.” His daughter Sarah Lee appeared with her husband Johnny Irion and their band.
