It’s Contest Time! Win Free Tickets to SOLOS^2 @ EMPAC on Friday!

Monday, March 1st, 2010

SOLOS^2 is a series of events designed to explore the acoustics of the concert hall. To kick off the series, EMPAC is presenting Sopranos + Piano featuring Gaudeamus Prize winning soprano Tony Arnold, soprano Haleh Abghari and pianist Jacob Greenberg from the New York City and Chicago-based International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).

But it’s a concert with a twist: the EMPAC director Johannes Goebel and music curator Micah Silver will be leading and/or encouraging folks to move around the space while the performance is happening in order to draw attention to the acoustics of the concert hall and its part in this (and any) performance. It’s a fantastic opportunity for any music lover to gain a deeper appreciation of musical timbre and directionality and to get a closer peek at the acoustical considerations that went into the design of EMPAC’s main hall.

We’ve got a pair of tickets to giveaway to one lucky Nippertown reader – simply send an email to solos@nippertown.com. We’ll draw a name at random and announce the winner on Thursday afternoon. Good luck!

It’s Contest Time! Win tickets to Marc Cohn and Suzanne Vega @ Troy Savings Bank Music Hall!

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

We have two pairs of tickets to see Marc Cohn & Suzanne Vega at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall next Wednesday, February 3, and we’re going to give them away to two lucky Nippertown readers. To enter to win a pair of tickets to this amazing evening of music in the acoustic wonderfulness of the Music Hall, all you have to do is send us an email at CohnAndVega@nippertown.com.

Marc Cohn, best known for his soulful Grammy-winning hit “Walking in Memphis”, has progressed into new material that contains complex, private emotions set to music of remarkable depth and complexity. Grammy nominated Suzanne Vega, whose hits include “Luka,” “Tom’s Diner” and “Left of Center,” conveys deep emotion in songs that focus on ordinary people and real world subjects.

The Small Print: one entry per person, please. Winners will be chosen at random next week. Good luck!

It’s Contest Time! Win tickets to Jeremy Wade’s “there is no end to more” @ EMPAC

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

We have two pairs of tickets to Jeremy Wade’s “there is no end to more” next week at EMPAC at RPI in Troy that we will give away to lucky Nippertown readers!

To win a pair of tickets, all you have to do is send us an email at JeremyWadeTickets@nippertown.com. Please include your phone number and specify which night you want to enter for: Thursday, January 28 or Friday, January 29. Both shows start at 8pm.

Jeremy Wade’s “there is no end to more” delves into Japanese kawaii (cute) culture – from the infantile fluff of Hello Kitty to the doe-eyed teenage love stories of anime – and its ubiquitous global influence. Through dance, stories, animation and video, Wade peeks under the slick, silly surface of kawaii to reveal its more insidious subtext, in which societal norm becomes aberration and consumption gives way to delusion. The result is a funny yet disembodied spectacle in the style of a children’s television show that exposes our relationship to the “endless more” that exists just beyond our grasp.

The Small Print: you can enter for both dates but only one entry per date, please. Winners will be chosen at random next week.

Win a Trip to See US Bonds in the UK

That’s Gary “US” Bonds, of course, the veteran rock and R&B shouter who racked up five Top 10 hits between 1960-1962 – including the chart-topping party-hearty anthem “Quarter to Three.”

Now 70 years old, Bonds can still party down with the best of them, although he probably won’t still be going at “Quarter to Three.” After all, when he makes a tour stop at Revolution Hall in Troy on Friday, October 9, he’ll be playing an early show. The doors open at 6pm.

In addition to seeing a rollicking, old- school rock ‘n’ roll show, there’s another reason to catch Bonds at Rev Hall.

Here’s the press release from Revolution Hall:

“The October 9 show at Revolution Hall marks his last U.S. show before heading on a European tour. Persons attending this Friday’s show will be entered for a chance to win round trip tickets to London to see Gary US Bonds while on tour with Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman. Gary US Bonds himself will announce the VIP ticket winner at the end of the show.”

Considering that tickets for the show are just $18 in advance or $22 at the door, that could be a pretty damn good deal.

Surprise.

The ten semi-finalists are: Courtney Biondo, Katrina Marie Burg, James Dowen, Danielle Goudin, Sharon MacPherson, J.T. Maple, Eric Margan, Victoria Minucci, Danielle Mozeleski and Benjamin Uytiepo.

All 11 remaining contestants will perform on Thursday, October 8 at Revolution Hall in Troy. The theme for Thursday’s competition is the Bealtes, and each semi-finalist will perform two songs from the catalog of the Fab Four.

At the conclusion of Thursday’s competition, the judges will select five finalists, and the audience will once again select a wild card entry to move onto the final night of Capital’s Region’s Got Talent at Revolution Hall on Friday, October 16.
