LIVE: Garland Nelson & Soul Session @ Congress Park, 8/25/09

August 26th, 2009, 12:47 pm by Greg

On Tuesday night, Bruce Springsteen was performing for some 25 thousand fans at SPAC, where lawn tickets set onlookers back $40. But just a couple miles away, rhythm & blues powerhouse Garland Nelson fronted his band Soul Session for several hundred people in Saratoga’s Congress Park, where lawn tickets were free.

Sporting an ear-to-ear grin, Garland Nelson shouted that he, too, was “Born In The USA” as he launched his band into a show that exploded with funky rhythms, rocking guitar and a smoking horn-section that honked and howled behind Nelson’s soulful tenor voice.

LIVE: Paul Geremia @ Congress Park, 8/4/09

August 5th, 2009, 6:24 pm by Greg

PaulGeremiaIn a free concert sponsored by the Saratoga Acoustic Blues Society, Paul Geremia settled into Congress Park in Saratoga Springs on Tuesday, August 4, singing songs and telling stories about such grand old men of the blues as Skip James, Son House, Sleepy John Estes and Pink Anderson.

He also played many of his own songs, drawing from albums that he recorded for Folkways, Flying Fish and Red House Records. Playing both six and 12-string acoustic guitars, Geremia took the crowd on a blues journey, traveling through the many Mississippi Delta blues styles and east to the Piedmont blues tradition.
