Yes, even swanky, high-class places like the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass. like to get down and get funky every once in a while.
Stretching from bluegrass (the Doerfels) to reggae (the Equalites), the free four-concert series takes place on the Clark’s lawn, so bring along a blanket, picnic or lawn chair.
The performances start at 6pm on Tuesdays in July. Here’s the rundown:
July 7: The Doerfels
July 14: Annie and the Hedonists
July 21: The Equalites
July 28: The Primate Fiasco

The year was 1967. Peppy Castro was just 17 years old, and he was touring the country with a Top 10 hit single.
That’s right, his band was the Blues Magoos, and their breakthrough hit was “(We Ain’t Got) Nothin’ Yet.”
After churning out albums with such mind-expanding titles as “Psychedelic Lollipop” and “Electric Comic Book,” the Blues Magoos called it quits in the ’70s. Castro went on to star on Broadway in “Hair,” formed such major-label bands Barnaby Bye and Balance and wrote advertising jingles for Diet Dr. Pepper, Wendy’s, Campbell’s Soup and Baby Ruth candy bars.
At 8pm Saturday, June 13, Castro steps into the spotlight at the Colony Cafe in Woodstock.
The annual Skidmore Summer Jazz Institute concert series always rolls around right after the Freihofer Jazz Festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, but if you’re not too jazzed out after the big SPAC jazz attack, you’ll find some great free music here.
The shows take place at 8pm at the Bernhard Theater on the Skidmore College campus:
Tuesday, June 30: The Gerald Clayton Quintet
Thursday, July 2: The Skidmore Faculty Jazz Sextet
Monday, July 6: The Jonathan Batiste Quintet
Thursday, July 9: The Skidmore Faculty Jazz Sextet

(Sundazed, 2009): With the resurrection of sublime ’60s soul singer Bettye LaVette’s career in recent years (the stunning Joe Henry-produced 2005 comeback “I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise,” and the 2007 follow-up “The Scene of the Crime”), it was inevitable that some of the nearly forgotten recordings from earlier in her career would once again see the light of day.
Of course, it wasn’t a given that they would be so lovingly collected as they are on this compilation from the Coxsackie indie label Sundazed. There are 11 solid tunes here – including “Games People Play” and “Piece of My Heart” – that she recorded in 1969-1970.
They’re all top-shelf, collected here for the first time, as LaVette splits the difference between the smoulder of Dusty Springfield and the sass of Tina Turner. Hot stuff.
LaVette steps into the spotlight at Freihofer’s Jazz Festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, June 28.
I don’t know. Maybe supergroups were never very good at coming up with band names. I mean, Crosby, Stills & Nash is hardly what you’d call imaginative, right?
So comparatively perhaps Tinted Windows isn’t really such an awful band name.
But Chickenfoot?!? I mean, really, what were those guys thinking? Those guys being guitar wizard Joe Satriani, Chili Peppers’ drum-thumper Chad Smith and the left-behind members of Van Halen – that would be bassist Michael Anthony and singer No. 2 Sammy Hagar, but not singer No. 3 Gary Cherone, just in case you’re keeping score…
After a quick 9-city roadtest earlier this year, Chickenfoot is embarking on its inaugural, full-scale tour, and the all-star foursome is scheduled to make a tour-stop at the Palace Theatre on Tuesday, August 18.
Anyway, it’s written somewhere that it takes three things to turn something in a bonafide trend. So we’ve got Tinted Windows. And we’ve got Chickenfoot. Which means that we need one more. At least.
So while we’re waiting for Chris Cornell to come to his senses and put his next all-star ensemble together, we started thinking about some of the supergroups that we’d put together. Think of it as fantasy baseball for rockers:
1) Donald Fagen, Merle Haggard, Jim Keltner, Dave Holland, Rick Nielsen and Elana James
2) Rickie Lee Jones, James Carter, Brian Blade, Jack Bruce, Andrew Bird
3) Terry Adams, Otis Taylor, Danny Barnes, Tony Levin, Marc Ribot, Jay Bellerose
