April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and the folks at the Albany Musicians’ Association held their annual Jazz Gala at the Colonie Elks Lodge in Latham on a recent Sunday afternoon in celebration. The music was as wide-ranging as the term “jazz” – from the traditional sounds of the Ragtime Windjammers to the decidedly more contemporary sounds of trumpeter Chris Pasin and his quartet.

Jazz Appreciation Month Returns to Nippertown

A JazzApril story

Okay, you know by now (or you ought to know, anyway) that I think EVERY month should be Jazz Appreciation Month! And in Greater Nippertown, that wouldn’t be hard to achieve. Between a local scene that’s extremely vibrant and major concerts by kick-ass artists like the Hot Club of Detroit, SFJAZZ Collective, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Joe Lovano’s Us Five and Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band, we’ve already reaped an abundance of musical riches this year.

But when someone at the Smithsonian Institute threw a dart at the office calendar, it landed on April: In the words the late, great gun nut Charlton Heston, “So let it be written; so let it be done!” Now UNESCO has gotten into the act, too, taking the idea global by promoting concerts all around the world on April 30th, otherwise known as International Jazz Day. Finally, there’s a worldwide conspiracy I can get behind!

And what do we get out of all this intercontinental musical goodness? Get out your Smart Phone, BlackBerry or crayons and start checking off the dates:

Real Good for Free: Albany Musicians’ Association’s Jazz Gala @ Colonie Elks Lodge, 4/25/10

April 23rd, 2010, 2:01 pm by Greg

Sure would be nice if every month was Jazz Appreciation Month, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately, that’s not the case…

But April isn’t over quite yet, and to top off all of the multitude of great jazz performances around Nippertown this month, the Albany Musician’s Association is presenting its sixth annual Jazz Gala on Sunday at the Colonie Elks Lodge.

Co-sponsored by the Swingtime Jazz Society and A Place for Jazz, the free, six-hour celebration begins at 2pm and features performances by many of the area’s finest musicians.

In addition, the event will honor two longtime local jazz heroes: big band vocalist Garry Stevens and Knickerbocker News jazz writer and columnist Georgia Urban.

Here’s the musical line-up for the bash:
2pm: The Lansingburg High School Stage Band under the direction of Kevin Champagne
3pm: The Leo Russo Octet
4pm: Tribute to Georgia Urban
4:15pm: Tommy Ippolito, solo jazz accordion
4:30pm: Sensamaya
5:20pm: “Swingin’ Songstress Set” featuring April Marie, Colleen Pratt, Jody Shayne and Patti Melita with the Peg Delaney Trio
6:15pm: Tribute to Garry Stevens featuring the Joey Thomas Big Band with Ray Lamere
