Print Matters: The MagaZine Scene

CHRONOGRAM CONGRATS: Our congratulations go out to everyone at Chronogram on the mid-Hudson Valley monthly magazine’s 20th anniversary. It’s a tough world out there in Magazine Land – especially for a big, glossy like the Kingston-based Chronogram – and the mag mortality rate is high. (We still fondly remember the short-lived Capital Region edition of the mag circa 2007, edited by Timothy Cahill.) So a double-decade anniversary is most certainly cause for serious celebration. Here’s to another 20 years…

COVER BOY/COVER GIRL: Yes, that’s Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter peeking at you from the cover of the upcoming issue of Filter. It’s the first big national music mag cover story for Saratoga’s own Phantogram, and it’s slated to hit newstands on Friday (September 13).

UPSTATE ARTS: The premiere issue of Up the River: A Journal of Poetry, Art & Photography is now available. The brainchild of poet-artists Jill Crammond and Keith Spencer, the first issue was edited by Carissa Haberland, Mary Panza and Thom Francis, and published by Albany Poets Press, celebrating the best in the arts not just from upstate New York, but from around the world.

ST. ROSE SCORES: Music industry mag Billboard has named Albany’s College of Saint Rose as one of 35 schools and universities with the top music business programs in North America. In its 2013 music business school guide, “Rock Enroll,” Billboard cites Saint Rose for its performance- and recording-based program that combines development of students’ technical, artistic and promotional skills with real-world artist management and production experience. Billboard notes that the College’s music industry program is for musicians who also want to “master the business side of the industry.”

David Greenberger Interview in Chronogram

One of our favorite local music writers Peter Aaron has written a wonderful, in-depth profile of Greenwich’s David Greenberger, who just happens to be one of our very all-time favorite artist/musician/writer/conceptualist/magazine publisher-editor/album-cover-designer/Renaissance man/all-around-good-guy buddies.

If you don’t already know Mr. Greenberger, you will after reading Aaron’s feature story in this month’s issue of Chronogram.

And if you missed’s review of Greenberger’s latest album, “Cherry Picking Apple Blossom Time,” from last August, you can just go here…
