CD: Chris Carey’s “Sunset Moon”

Yes, we here at have unfortunately let several excellent homegrown CDs slip through the cracks. These things sometimes happen when you’re a little Mom & Pop website trying to cover a whole bunch of stuff around a rapidly growing arts scene. But we’re making a renewed effort to play catch up over the next couple of weeks. So some of the upcoming CDs that we’ll be reviewing might not be “new” new, but we didn’t want them to go unnoticed…

Chris Carey: Sunset Moon(, 2010):

Chris Carey is probably best known around Nippertown as the drummer with Railbird, and let’s face, when a drummer steps out to record a solo album, sometimes, well, eyes tend to roll.

Fortunately, that’s not the case with “Sunset Moon,” an excellent showcase not only for Carey’s considerable talents as a lead vocalist, but also as a songwriter and arranger.

These ten original tunes by Carey sparkle with an easy-going, country-folk feel, eschewing the progressively adventurous, indie-rock path that Railbird has been following.

LIVE: Exit Dome III @ the Exit Dome, 2/13/10

Oh sure, the reunited Blotto was the headlining band at the third Exit Dome extravaganza at the WMHT-TV studios in North Greenbush last Saturday (see yesterday’s story), but they were by no means the only reason to be in attendance at the sold-out show.

Once again, the fine folks at WEXT-FM assembled a solid and wonderfully diverse line-up of Local 518 musical talent, showcasing the considerable skills and diversity of the homegrown Nippertown music scene.

5. THE FIRST BAND I WAS EVER IN WAS … A melodic power-trio called Enigmatic

Railbird‘s Chris Carey spreads his wings and celebrates the release of his debut solo CD “Sunset Moon” with a party and performance at the Bread & Jam Cafe in Cohoes on Saturday (January 9). Accompanying him will ba an all-star band featuring Chris Kyle, Kevin Maul, Tony Markellis and Sam Zucchini. Opening the show will be Sean Rowe.
