Century Plants

Review and photograph by Joel Reed

Just before Many Arms crashed into “Surface of Last Standing,” the first song of their set at the Spotty Dog Books & Ale in Hudson, someone who’d been enjoying the evening too much had a request: “Play Jimi! I love Jimi Hendrix! I know you can do it – ‘The Wind Cried Mary!'”

He was right – of course they could. Nick Millevoi (guitar), Johnny DeBlase (bass) and Ricardo Lagomasino (drums) have the chops to play anything, but in their own way. Saxophonist Colin Fisher, joining the group for this tour and on Suspended Definition, Many Arms’ latest release from John Zorn’s Tzadik label, responded that they’ll play all of Hendrix mashed-up, condensed and backwards.

Small Axe: (L to R) Thom Hall, Kelly Murphy, DJ Miller

They were one of the best local bands of the past decade, but Saratoga County’s stoner-rock trio Small Axe has been mostly dormant since bassist Kelly Murphy and drummer Thom Hall relocated to Central New York a couple of years ago.

They returned last week at Valentine’s Music Hall, showing no signs of rustiness during a set that sounded like vintage Small Axe and included both unrecorded material and songs familiar to the faithful: murky, heavy-riffing tunes with easy-to-catch grooves like “Fight Song,” “Inner Ear,” “Garage Sale” and “My Goat.”

What’s that ringing in my ear?

The Albany Sonic Arts Collective’s 2011 season kicked off with the aptly titled “Deep Freeze: Experimental Music for Snowy Times,” last Saturday at the Upstate Artists Guild in Albany. The event was well attended – not a folding plastic chair to spare, despite the lack of video backdrop.

First up was the guitar-wielding duo Mark Lunt and Chris Bassett – collectively know as Insect Posse – who coxed tone and feedback from their instruments including their feet with great effect. Self described as “purveyors of noisy yet hypnotic hymns to other worlds of nothingness.”

Media Watch: Pitchfork Raves Over Century Plants

Century Plants (photo by Andrzej Pilarczyk)

Last Friday on Pitchfork, Marc Masters raved about Albany’s intrepid sonic explorers Century Plants in “The Out Door,” the column that he co-authors with Grayson Currin.

In reviewing the new release from the diehard experimental music duo of Ray Hare and Eric Hardiman, Masters hailed “Dissolvers” – Century Plants’ split vinyl LP with Locrian – as “both stubbornly free and devoutly musical,” as well as boasting “wide, cavernous sounds.” Yeah, and then he compares the duo’s tracks – “Fading Out” and “Delirium” – to Neil Young’s “Arc.” Not too shabby…

And right there right at the top of the column? Why, it’s a photograph of Century Plants by master shutter-smith Andrzej Pilarczyk – a performance photo originally published on Nippertown.com in conjunction with Century Plants’ opening act gig for Faust at Proctors back in 2009.

Next up for Century Plants? They’ll be playing the next Albany Sonic Arts Collective concert at Upstate Artists Guild in Albany at 8pm on Saturday, February 19. Also performing will be Holland Hopson, SoundBarn and Insect Posse. Admission is $5.

Ho hum.

Another legendary 1970s German experimental rock band armed with a cement mixer and power sanders. Why don’t we ever get a chance to see something different in this town?
