Be Here Now: Christopher O’Riley & Carter Brey @ Tannery Pond

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Sonatas from the pens of Richard Strauss, Francis Poulenc and Frederic Chopin are all on the program when cellist Carter Brey and pianist Christopher O’Riley kick off the 2009 summer season of chamber concerts at Tannery Pond at 3pm Sunday, May 24.

So it might come as something of a surprise to note that O’Riley’s most recent recording – which you can hear at his MySpace page – is a nine-minute, knotty ‘n’ dissonant solo piano arrangement of Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.”

Or if you’re already familiar with O’Riley – who has also hosted the weekly NPR program “From the Top” for a decade – maybe it won’t surprise you at all, considering that he has previously recorded compositions by the likes of Nick Drake, Portishead, Elliott Smith, Pink Floyd and Radiohead.

So who knows just what he might pull out of his hat as an encore at Tannery Pond?
