Success is always a combination of luck and talent.

And, as she declares on the title song of her four-song debut CD, Nippertown’s Emma Torncello is indeed a lucky gal, but truth be told, her luck pales in comparison with the powerhouse talent that she unleashes on this stellar EP.

Classically trained in both piano and voice, Torncello turns her attention to the blues here – undoubtedly pointed in that direction by Nippertown blues-rock vet Tony Perrino, who she’s been studying with for the past couple of years – serving up soulful renditions of Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Joe” and Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love,” and well as a pair of rock-solid original tunes – which actually outshine the covers.

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … Deftones’ “White Pony” when I was 8 years old. Great album back then, and still a great album. My first metal album I ever bought was In Flames’ “The Jester Race” when I was 9 years old, and it’s still possibly one of my favorite albums to date!

Capital Underground Live Local Music Concert Series @ the Washington Avenue Armory

Ralph Renna – local rocker and one of the most tireless promoters of the Nippertown music scene – is thinking big these days.

For some time now, he’s been regularly producing his weekly Capital Underground Live shows at Savannah’s in Albany on Wednesday nights, as well as his weekly acoustic music-meets-comedy Monday Night Madness evenings at the Villa Valenti Pub in Troy.

But this winter Renna is upping the ante considerably by invading a considerably larger venue for some headbanging showcases – the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany.
