The Capital Region Blues Network is holding its fourth annual fundraising bash tonight (Friday, April 11). Music, raffles and a silent auction will be held at the Fuller Roadhouse Grille in Albany at 7pm.

Rhett Tyler and his Early Warning band and Soul Sky will bring their talents for the evening.

Mark Emanatian has a long history with the CRBN network and says it is important for him to be supportive as the organization does much to educate young artists about the history of blues music by being part of the Blues in Schools programs.

“I have been involved especially playing with Folding Sky and the Ernie Williams band, and I think all these blues societies across the states are a great movement, as they are keeping an essential art form alive,” said Emanatian.

The Capital Region Blues Network hosted its annual Acoustic/Duo Blues Showdown at the Fuller Roadhouse Grille in Albany on Saturday night. Facing off in the competition were Morning Kill Creek Blues (featuring Zack Cohen and Michael Koshgarian); Leslie Barkman; Jimy Graham; and last year’s winner Holly & Evan.

It was a very close battle, but as chosen by the crowd in attendance, the winner was Jimy Graham, who will be headed to Memphis in January to represent the Capital Region Blues Network in the International Blues Competition.

Back in August, the Capital Region Blues Network also held its Blues Band Showdown with Joe Lowry & the Second Mile Blues Band emerging as the winner for the second year in a row.

Congrats to Jimy Graham, Joe Lowry & the Second Mile Blues Band, all of the other participating musicians and everyone who came out to support the Local 518 blues scene.

Blues Band Showdown

The Capital Region Blues Network is throwing its Blues Band Showdown at The Linda in Albany on Saturday, July 14. The six bands will compete in the showdown for a prize package of $500, a nomination to the International Blues Competition in Memphis, a pair of paid gigs and professional guitar set-ups – a total value of over $1,500.

Each of the competing bands will host a Sunday Night Jam at the Fuller Roadhouse Grille in Albany, and the competition is already underway with Joe Lowry & the Second Mile Blues Band hosting the first jam earlier this month. Holly & Evan are up next on Fuller Road on June 3, followed by the Ed Wool Band (June 17) and Collette & the Mudcats (June 24).

That leaves two spots still open and up for grabs.

If you’re interested in throwing your hat into the ring for the competition, check out the rules and regulations here. Deadline for all entries is Thursday, June 14.

Jammin’ the Blues

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

If you’re a fan of roots-music – especially the blues – you may want to check out a fairly new organization on the Nippertown music scene – the Capital Region Blues Network.

According to their website, “The Capital Region Blues Network is an all-volunteer group of blues fans and musicians dedicated to providing, promoting, and preserving blues music in New York’s Capital Region.”

One of the events that the group has focused on is the continuation of the Sunday Night Jam at the Roadhouse Grille in Colonie. The YouTube video above features the Rhett Tyler Band performing at last Sunday’s session.

The weekly sessions take place at 8pm on Sundays, although due to the Super Bowl this coming Sunday, the Sunday Night Jam has been moved to 8pm on Friday, February 4. Stephen Smith will be hosting Friday’s jam, with special guests Denny Dwyer (guitar) and Ian Bennett (harmonica/sax) dropping by.
