Woodstock Film Festival to Honor Bruce Beresford

Australian director/writer Bruce Beresford will be honored with the Woodstock Film Festival’s Maverick Award at the festival ceremonies this fall.

A talented director of actors, Beresford has directed six stars in Academy Award nominated performances – Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Tess Harper, Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd. In addition, he has been nominated for two Academy Awards himself both as director (1983’s “Tender Mercies”) and screenwriter (1980’s “Breaker Morant”).

Beresford’s additional films include “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Black Robe,” “Double Jeopardy” and “Evelyn.” He is currently in Ulster County filming his upcoming movie “Peace, Love and Misunderstanding” with a cast that includes Jane Fonda, Catherine Keener, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chase Crawford.

The 11th annual Woodstock Film Festival will take place throughout the Hudson Valley from September 29-October 3, and Beresford will be presented with the award during the Gala Award Ceremony on Saturday, October 2, at BackStage Productions in Kingston.

The Honorary Maverick Award is given each year to an individual whose life and work is based on creativity, independent vision and social activism. Previous recipients include Richard Linklater, Kevin Smith, Christine Vachon, Barbara Kopple, Tim Robbins, Les Blank, D.A. Pennebaker & Chris Hegedus, Woody Harrelson, Mira Nair and Steve Buscemi.
