Pat Metheny, What Was The First Record You Ever Bought?

“I remember the first single that I bought – `Because’ by the Dave Clark Five. I was seven years old, and I saved up my money from mowing the lawn three weeks in a row to do it.

“I was a total Beatles freak, but I sort of dug all of that music. And there was something about that tune in particular… I can’t remember exactly what it was, but I remember that was the tune that I wanted to buy.”

Metheny will be playing with the Gary Burton Quartet Revisited at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, Mass. on Friday, June 19 and at the Freihofer’s Jazz Festival at SPAC on Saturday, June 27.

“Oh, yeah. I think it was the dB’s. Have you ever heard of them?

They had a song called `Amplifier,’ and I used to love that song. Someone played it for me once, and I thought it was so cool.

I still think about that song a lot. It’s so doleful and full of pathos … in a great way, I mean.”

You can catch Elana and the Hot Club of Cowtown in the spotlight at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington, Mass. on Saturday, June 20.
