“It was Beatles stuff, definitely. The Beatles, and then Joni Mitchell. Her ‘Blue’ record was a big album for us around the house when I was growing up.”
Banjo pioneer Bela Fleck with the reunited original line-up of the Flecktones – bass master Victor Wooten, avant garde percussionist FutureMan and harmonicat-pianist Howard Levy – take to the stage at The Egg in Albany at 7:30pm on Sunday (November 6). Tix are $39.50 and $49.50.

It’s not that bassist Edgar Meyer breaks down boundaries between musical genres. It’s more like he just doesn’t even know that those boundaries exist.
He’s recorded with Yo-Yo Ma, Garth Brooks, Wynton Marsalis, Elton John, Steve Earle, Joshua Bell, the New Grass Revival and James Taylor. To name just a few.
Last year, Meyer released an album of duets with mandolin phenom Chris Thile. This year, he worked with Bela Fleck and Zakir Hussain to compose and perform “The Melody of Rhythm: Triple Concerto & Music for Trio,” which they recorded with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Meyer, Fleck and Hussain (minus the Detroit Symphony) are making a tourstop at The Egg in Albany on Saturday night, and recently Meyer took some time out to chat with Nippertown.com about making music:

“It would have been Elton John probably. Yeah, the one with ‘Candle in the Wind.’ What was that called? Right, ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.’
You see, my father had an extensive collection, so the first ones that I bought were popular music. But I grew up with a wonderful classical and jazz collection, and that’s my first attachment. When I bought them for myself, the first thing that I bought was some Elton John record, I believe, when I was in the seventh or eighth grade.
I guess the point that I’m trying to make is that that was very late in my personal development because I was so involved with music from such a young age. And my father’s collection really sufficed for a long time.”
Classical and bluegrass composer-bassist Edgar Meyer teams up with banjo master Bela Fleck and tabla wizard Zakir Hussain for an innovative evening of adventurous music at The Egg in Albany on Saturday, October 3.
