Funsgiving 2014

Seven years ago a group of friends and musicians called themselves B3nson and held a small gathering on the first floor of their favorite local music hall and beer joint. Each year since then the celebration of music, fun, giving thanks, and facial hair has grown.

Be Here Now: B3nson Records Triple CD Release Party @ Valentine’s, 12/4/09

November 30th, 2009, 3:06 pm by Greg

Not one…
Not two…
But three new CD releases will be celebrated at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany at 8pm on Friday (December 4).

And they’re all rolling out of that magical musical factory known as the B3nson Recording Company, Nippertown’s most charming and hardest working local independent record label and music collective.

B3nson is pleased to welcome brand new homegrown debut from the solo acoustic act Littlefoot (aka, Seth Tillinghast), who brings lush vocals to a sparse musical setting on “If You Give a Grouch a Guitar.”

Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics (Ryan Stewart and Richard Nolan Jr. of fellow B3nson band Beware! The Other Head of Science) serve up a haunting batch of a dozen thoroughly original tunes on their full-length debut, “The End of Mont Pleasant.”

In addition, Friday’s celebration and performance will also serve as the launching pad for the fourth full-length CD by original B3nsonites, the Hoborchestra. The brainchild of Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned‘s multi-instrumentalist Tim Koch, “I Only Eat You to Make Me Stronger” finds him collaborating with a who’s-who of B3nsonites, including Aaron Smith (Scientific Maps), Matthew Loiacono (courtesy of Collar City Records), Alex Muro (Sgt. Dunbar), Richard Nolan (the Boston Celtics), Jen O’Connor and Eric Krans (We are Jeneric).

At Friday’s celebration, all three new B3nson records will be available for sale individually ($5) and in a package deal for all three ($12).

Be Here Now: B3nson Family Funsgiving Celebration, Valentine’s Music Hall, 11/19/09

November 16th, 2009, 3:15 pm by Greg

Forget Festivus.

It’s time for everyone’s favorite fake holiday, Funsgiving. And, of course, no one knows how to throw down a Funsgiving party like the fine folks at the B3nson Recording Company and Collective.

The second annual B3nson Family Funsgiving celebration takes over Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany on Thursday (November 19) with a seven-act extravaganza and plenty of the required fun, too.

Solo acoustic acts Stacey Ullman and Pinguinos will kick things off followed by the rauckus and enthralling Barons In the Attic.

And the two newest recruits to the ever-expanding B3nson roster will both be making their Nippertown debut. Secret Release promises a dynamic, fast-moving and emotionally charged musical experience. And Man Scouts are described as “a camp-centric trip of a garage band complete with skits and earn-able merit badges.”

Wrapping up the Funsgiving festivities on Thursday, two of B3nson’s most promising family bands will step into the spotlight. Scientific Maps will perform with a stripped-down line-up featuring Aaron Smith and Donna Baird, as they tackle semi-minimalist rendition of Maps favorites old and new. Meanwhile, the expanded We are Jeneric will keep the B3nson ball rolling along, as they showcase fab fauna faves from their recently released new CD, “Animals Are People Too.”

The music is slated to get underway at 7:30pm on Thursday, and admission is $7; or $5 with the donation of a non-perishable food item or two. The Regional Food Bank will also receive a large portion of the proceeds from the evening’s festivities.

The Boston Celtics’ Design-Our-Logo Contest

September 15th, 2009, 12:19 pm by Greg

The Boston Celtics are a two piece experimental outfit from Schenectady, New York. We are very hairy, large and loud. Please enjoy our music.” So proclaims the dynamic duo of Ryan Stewart and Richard Nolan Jr., who are the Boston Celtics.

In conjunction with the upcoming release of their debut album, “The End of Mont Pleasant,” the B3nson Recording Company twosome is looking for a logo, and they need your help. Actually, according to the lyrics of their song, “The Story of the Boston Celtics,” they kinda already know what they want their logo to look like:

“an upside down tree that looks like a painting of a pro palming a basketball”

But they’re holding a contest and asking you to design the finished logo for them based on that description. Here are the complete contest rules.

All contest entries will receive a free digital download of the “Mont Pleasant” EP, featuring five non-LP tracks. Prizes include digital downloads of both the EP and full-length CD, CDs and McDonald’s gift certificates.

Email contest entries to by Thursday, October 1 deadline.
