Asleep at the Wheel’s new album is titled Still the King: Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, but of course, long tall Texan Ray Benson and his band have been celebrating Bob Wills’ music since they first formed 45 years ago.

So, there really weren’t any surprises during their concert at The Egg’s Swyer Theatre earlier this month – just good ole, flat-out, rollicking western swing, as they glided through gems like “Big Balls in Cowtown,” “Route 66” and, of course, “Miles and Miles of Texas.”

Benson is the only remaining original member, but he always surrounds himself with top-notch players, and the Wheel’s current incarnation is no exception, fueled by keyboardist Emily Gimble, fiddler Katie Shore and saxophonist/pedal steel guitarist Eddie Rivers, as well as the ace rhythm section of drummer Dave Sanger and bassist Dave Miller.

Win FREE TIX to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band With Asleep at the Wheel at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall on Thursday!

September 24th, 2012, 12:00 pm by Greg

Over the course of their long musical career together, they’ve been a jug band, a folk-rock band, a country band and a bluegrass band, but they’ve always been the Dirt Band.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have done so many things since their first hit back in 1967, “Buy for Me the Rain.” They landed a Top 10 pop hit with the classic “Mr. Bojangles” in 1971. They made music history – literally – with the landmark “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” album in 1973. And they rose to the top of the country charts with “Fishin’ in the Dark” in 1987.

The line-up has changed considerably over the years, but the sound remains the same, anchored solidly by Texas tunesmith Benson’s deep and easy-on-the-ears voice. Their fan base is huge and spread out from coast to coast and includes Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Vince Gill, the Dixie Chicks, Merle Haggard and so many more among them.

Ray Benson

“It was a Pete Seeger album, the first album that I ever got. Before that, I used to listen to the radio – a little pink transistor radio that my sister had.

Fats Domino was really the first music I remember hearing. It was ‘Walking to New Orleans,’ and I bought that 45 RPM single.”

Bandleader-singer-guitarist Ray Benson rounds up western swing kings Asleep at the Wheel for a return engagement at The Egg in Albany at 8pm on Friday (November 18). Tix are $29.50.
