Real Good for Free: Saratoga Blues Celebration, 9/4-5/10

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Saratoga Acoustic Blues SocietyIt’s a fest within a fest.

In conjunction with the Final Stretch Festival in downtown Saratoga Springs this weekend, the Saratoga Acoustic Blues Society is presenting the third annual Saratoga Blues Celebration.

But not all of the blues will be of the acoustic variety this time around.

On Saturday evening, the SABS stage will be located on Ellsworth Jones Place (formerly Grove Street) by the Saratoga City Center. The music will kick off at 7pm featuring such performers as Bluesology, Sonny Speed, Mikki Bakken and Street Corner Holler.

“The outdoor venue lends itself to a larger sound than is typically part of old school acoustic blues, so SABS has decided to go electric – to sponsor a night of electric blues in the tradition of Muddy Waters and Elmore James,” explains SABS co-founder Phil Drum.

On the following evening, Sunday, September 5, SABS returns to its usual venue, Stockade Oriental Rug Imports in the Old Firehouse. And SABS will also returns to its original mission with an all-acoustic blues show. The music will get underway at 5:30pm Sunday and will feature performances by SABS co-founders Drum and Ray Giguere along with such other Saratoga music scene mainstays as Rick Bolton & Sharon Dwyer, Jeff & Becky Walton, the Tequila Mockingbirds, Michael Eck, Rob Adkins, Glenn Weiser, the Bentwood Rockers, Ray Pashoukos, Gail Sparlin and John Sciolino.

Festival Fever: moe.down XI Update

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

moe.down
The 11th annual moe.down takes place this weekend, and we thought better better update a bit since we last wrote about it.

CHANGE: Jakob Dylan has cancelled his appearance, but Grace Potter & the Nocturnals have signed on in his slot.

Jam band faves (and former Nippertownians) moe. have moved their fest to a new location this year: Gelston Castle Estate in Mohawk, a quick, easy drive west just off the Thruway, which probably knocks off about an hour of driving time from their previous fest location in Turin.

Live: The Mountain Bike World Cup @ Windham, 8/26-29/10

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The Mountain Bike World Cup @ Windham

Spectators stood for miles wrapped around the steep sloop and cheering on their favorites as riders literally flew over their heads at the Mountain Bike World Cup finale in Windham last weekend. The four-day event kicked off on Thursday, and riders spent the first two days registering and training for the race.

The event took place mere days before riders compete at the World Championships currently taking place at Mont-Sainte-Anne in Quebec, and the small town of Windham went all out with the festivities – including a block party, bike stunt show, rock concert by Chris Barron and the Time Bandits, fireworks, a pool party and an indoor/outdoor expo that would make any mountain bike-lover drool.

Wow! Was that great, or what?

I managed to log about six and a half hours at Rest Fest on Sunday, and the primary thought that kept running through my mind was, “Damn, I wish I’d been able to have been here on Saturday, too!”
