1956: Buddy Holley became “Buddy Holly” when he signed a recording contract with Decca Records that left out the “e” in his last name, and he decided to go with it.
1958: The Quarrymen performed at the Wilson Hall in the Garston section of Liverpool, England. Afterwards, member Paul McCartney introduces his friend George Harrison to John Lennon.
1965: The Dave Clark Five began the filming of their movie “Catch Us if You Can.”
1969: Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton of Cream announced that they have formed Blind Faith with Steve Winwood.
1971: Frank Zappa was forced to cancel a concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall after venue officials deemed his “200 Motels” to be obscene and refused to allow its performance.
1972: The Beatles’ official fan club disbanded.
1980: David Bowie and his wife Angie officially divorced after being married for nearly a decade.
1981: R.E.M. made their first recording sessions at Bombay Studios in Smyrna, Georgia. Some of the songs recorded included their debut single “Radio Free Europe,” which was released the following July on local Hib-Tone Records, which pressed 1,000 copies.
1982: Cher made her Broadway debut in “Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.”
1988: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle reunited at Royal Albert Hall for the British Phonographic Industry awards, leading to a full-fledged 25th anniversary tour of The Who the following year.
2004: OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below became the first hip-hop recording to win the Album of the Year Grammy Award.
