FREE: Mary Armentrout Dance Theater @ EMPAC on Friday [Berkshire on Stage]

October 26th, 2017, 2:00 pm by Sara

At 5pm on Friday (October 27), the Mary Armentrout Dance Theater will present a special work-in-progress performance of a new project commissioned by EMPAC at RPI in Troy. A promenading performance, Listening Creates an Opening will take the audience across the Rensselaer campus, from a turn-of-the-century classroom to the contemporary EMPAC building. Set to premiere in Fall 2018, the final work will also incorporate sites in downtown Troy.

Listening Creates an Opening is a collaboration between San Francisco-based choreographer and performance artist Mary Armentrout, media artist Ian Winters and sound artist Evelyn Ficarra. The trio have undertaken a series of EMPAC residencies in the past year to develop choreography and multimedia for the project, including a time-lapse video of EMPAC’s north staircase that will run an entire calendar year. The central focus of this new work is how our relationship to technology changes when we are conscious of our physical movements with and around it. Leading the audience between different performance sites, Listening Creates an Opening will also explore what types of histories and contexts reveal themselves from this consciously embodied perspective.
