NAME: Melissa Aldana
BAND AFFILIATION: The Melissa Aldana Quartet
INSTRUMENT: Tenor saxophone

THE FIRST MEMORY OF HEARING OR SEEING MUSIC… I come from a musical family, so I grew up hearing my dad playing and teaching at home all day long. That is how I became interested in music in the first place.

THE FIRST MUSICIAN WHO MADE ME THINK “THAT’S WHAT I WANT TO DO”… Sonny Rollins.

THE FIRST TIME I PLAYED THE TENOR SAX IN PUBLIC – FOR MONEY… in Boston.

THE FIRST MEMORY OF MY FRESHMAN YEAR AT BERKLEE SCHOOL OF MUSIC… Lots of practicing, and super excited to meet a lot of my heroes like Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Greg Osby, among others.

THE FIRST TIME I REALIZED I COULD MAKE THE SAX-TRIO CONCEPT WORK – BOTH IN CONCERT AND IN THE STUDIO… I never thought about if it would work or not. I did it because I thought this was the best for me to get better and have a deeper understanding of melody and harmony.

The Melissa Aldana Quartet will perform at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy at 7pm on Saturday (October 21). Tickets are $20.

NOTE: We’re giving away a pair of FREE TICKETS to the Melissa Aldana Quartet’s concert to a lucky Nippertown reader. Deadline to enter is 12:30pm today (Friday, October 20). GO HERE to enter…

This should be a fantastic show!!!

It will be. I was lucky enough to see Melissa play a trio date at San Jose Jazz Summerfest in 2016. She is an absolute monster, and one of the best tenor players in the genre today. Do not sleep on this show, Greater Nippertown jazz fans (or anyone who knows nothing about jazz but might like to know more)! Come on out!
