The annual FreshGrass festival at MASS MoCAin North Adams may be rooted in bluegrass, but by no means whatsoever does it adhere to any specific musical genre. Sure, you could hear some straight-up traditional bluegrass and plenty of newgrass, but you could also soak up the sounds of bands plowing through covers Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and Radiohead’s “Creep.”

With three outdoor stages and one more indoors – not to mention the spur-of-the-moment, pop-up concerts that took place in the museum’s galleries throughout the afternoon – there was plenty of varied music to choose from on Day Two of the three-day fest – from the raucous Hackensaw Boys to the rollickin’ Ramblin Jug Stompers, from the sweet chamber ensemble sounds of Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings to the gloriously raucous clatter of the Suitcase Junket.

And, of course, there were Saturday’s headliners – Brandi Carlile and the Wood Brothers – whipping up the crowd out in Joe’s Field at day’s end. Certainly nobody’s gonna call them bluegrass bands…
