Ask Nipper: Does Anybody Remember a Song by The Cabbies Called “Step Up”?

Nate writes:

There was a song that I liked back in the ’80s by a local band called The Cabbies. I never saw the band live, and they weren’t really the kind of band that I typically liked in that era, but there was a song of theirs that I think was called “Step Up” that received some radio airplay on WCDB-FM, where I deejayed, starting in 1985.

I have been trying for several years to find a copy of this song but have been entirely unsuccessful. It doesn’t appear to have ever been pressed as a record or even sold on cassette. In fact, it’s almost impossible to find anyone who remembers the band at all.

And since the band existed in the pre-web era, I’ve only (so far) found a single reference to them online, on a College of St. Rose archive page.

So, any chance you have a recording of the song? Or do you know how to contact one of the former band members? Or maybe just know the name of someone who was in the band? Or even remember them at all?

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Can any Nippertown reader help out Nate?

Nate: I found a pair of demo cassette tapes by The Cabbies. One is undated and features “I’m Looking Through You,” “Someday, Someway,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” You Know Too Much” and “Been Down That Road Before.” The other is dated Nov. 1986 and features “How Come You,” “Front Page News,” “If I Can’t Have You,” “You Know Too Much” and “Been Down That Road Before.” The only name on either tape is Michael Brophy…
