FEST: QWERTY Festival at the Greenville Drive-In This Weekend

QWERTY: The Second Annual Festival of Type and the Letter Arts is slated to take over the Greenville Drive-In this weekend.

QWERTY kicks off on Friday (June 23), which just happens to be World Typewriter Day, and continues on Saturday with live musical concerts, films, a gathering of typewriter poets, typewriter and letter-art and a type-in hosted by Eric Molbach. Bring your typewriter or use one of the free typewriters provided on a first-come first-served basis.

Ticket prices are $10 for Friday; $5 for kids 15 and younger. Saturday tickets are $15; $8 for kids 15 and younger. A two-day, all-festival pass is also available for $20; $10 for kids 15 and younger.

Here’s the complete schedule of events for the 2017 QWERTY Festival:

FRIDAY: JUNE 23

6:30pm: Snack Bar opens with Typewriter-Themed Art Exhibit
Featuring typewriter-inspired artwork and multimedia projects at the snack bar throughout the weekend.

7pm: Cocktails in the Projectionists Club Biergarten
Raise a glass to celebrate National Typewriter Day, the anniversary of the granting of the U.S. patent to Christopher Latham Sholes in 1868. The Projectionsts Club offers a selection of unique cocktails to enjoy and featured local wine, spirits and beer.

7:45-8:45pm: Live Music in the Projectionists Club Biergarten with Brian Dewan
Brian Dewan is a Catskill artist who works in many media, including art, music, audio-visual performances, decorative painting, furniture design, poetry and musical instrument design. He has produced four albums – Tells the Story, The Operating Theater, Words of Wisdom and Ringing at the Speed of Prayer – and concertized extensively as a solo artist, as well as having performed in various collaborations and as a sideman.

9-10:15pm: 10th Anniversary Screening of “Helvetica”
This 2007 documentary by Gary Huswit explores typography, graphic design and global visual culture. “Helvetica” looks at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.

SATURDAY (JUNE 24)

3:30-6:30pm: Projectionists Club Biergarten Type-In
Hosted by Erik Molbach, who shares a portion of his typewriter collection for poetry, letter or other writing and is available to answer questions and share his experience with collecting and repairing typewriters. Bringing in your own typewriter is strongly encouraged.

4-6:30pm: On-Demand Typewriter Poetry
Typewriter poets will be available to create unique poetry as you listen to the click-clack of the keys.

7-8:30pm: Live concert performance by the Boston Typewriter Orchestra
A collective endeavor which engages in rhythmic typewriter manipulation combined with elements of performance, comedy and satire. BTO aims to entertain the masses while providing an outlet for the creative urges of its members.

9-10:45pm: Screening of “California Typewriter”
The film by director Doug Nichol is a story about people whose lives are connected by typewriters. The film is a meditation on creativity and technology featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer, Sam Shepard, David McCullough and others.
