RIP: James “Superharp” Cotton, 1935-2017
James Cotton – one of the last remaining blues legends – has died in Austin, Texas at the age of 81. The harmonica great began his musical career at the tender age of just nine years old and enjoyed stints touring with Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin’ Wolf and for a dozen years, Muddy Waters, too.
In 1966, Cotton set out on his own, launching his solo career and snaring multiple Grammy Awards over the course of the next half-century.
From the long-defunct Dudley Do-Right’s in Troy to The Egg in Albany, blues icon James Cotton played Greater Nippertown numerous times over the years. His final Local 518 performance was a Music Haven concert at Proctors in Schenectady in 2014.
