Drummer-composer Joe Barna’s ongoing project Sketches of Influence recently made their Hudson Valley debut in Kingston at the uptown venue Senate Garage as part of the ongoing Jazzstock concert series.

In addition to Barna, this version of Sketches of Influence featured John Menegon (bass), Dave Solazzo (keyboards), Mark Kleinhaut (guitar) and Matt Garrison (tenor saxophone).

The first set comprised entirely of Barna’s original compositions, including “Vic’s Place” (Lucas Confectionary), “Little Angel” (dedicated to Barna’s daughter), “Sudden Lee” (about saxophonist Lee Russo), “Ivory Romance” (a joint composition with the late Lee Shaw) and “The Grind” (a tribute to the day job, the one that enables us to create).

The second set consisted of standards performed by the various members of the band playing together in smaller combos.

Next up in the biweekly series at Senate Garage will be a concert by jazz vocalist Giacomo Gates with the Dan Miller Trio, slated to take place at 7:30pm on Thursday, March 23. Tickets are $15.
